Rainbow Defense Coalition
of Santa Cruz County and the Pajaro Valley
Our Rainbow Defense Coalition formed in May 2023 to help celebrate and defend literacy, inclusion and creative expression for Watsonville's first Drag Story Time. Understanding that the national assault on LGBTQIA2S+ rights is directly tied to white supremacist, racist, misogynist hate groups, we are committed to working together to transform hatred with love, build community, and defend the safety and full human dignity of everyone. Our name is chosen to honor both the long legacy of queer pride and the multi-racial poor people's campaign of the original Rainbow Coalition.
The specifics of our defense will change depending on the event. However, our main strategy is to stand together holding rainbow umbrellas and flags to provide a visual show of love and support. We welcome event goers while being also attentive to everyone's safety.
The Coalition currently includes Pajaro Valley Pride, Raíces y Cariño Family Center, Santa Cruz Black, Santa Cruz Equity Collab, SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) Santa Cruz County, Transfamilies, Equity Transit, The Diversity Center and we welcome others who share the same vision and commitments.

Nuestra Coalicion de Defensa del Arco Iris fue formado en mayo del 2023 para celebrar y defender literatura, inclusión, y la creatividad de expresión para el primer Tiempo de Lectura “Drag” en Watsonville. Es importante entender que el acoso nacional de los derechos LGBTQIA2S+ es directamente relacionado con grupos de la supremacía blanca, anti-inmigración, racismo, y misoginia, estamos comprometidos en trabajar juntos para transformar el odio con amor, construir una comunidad, y defender la seguridad y la total dignidad humana para todos. Nuestro nombre fue escogido en honor de la larga legacía del orgullo queer y la campaña multirracial de los pobres de la Coalición Arcoíris original.
